Rethinking MOFs and Single-Crystal Structure Analysis Outside the Average Box
Prof. Stefano Canossa
We’re delighted to share the recording of the second MOFspace Webinar of Season 2, held on 6 October 2026!
In this webinar, Prof. Stefano Canossa from the Institute of Multiscale Matter and System, Ewha Womans University, presented his talk entitled “Rethinking MOFs and Single-Crystal Structure Analysis Outside the Average Box.”
The webinar explored how structural disorder in crystalline materials, including defects, distortions, and thermal motion, can reveal important information about their properties and behavior. In metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), such disorder can give rise to remarkable structural and functional diversity.
The talk highlighted how advanced crystallographic approaches can:
- Go beyond conventional average crystal structure analysis
- Combine Bragg and diffuse scattering to investigate structural disorder
- Reveal local structural features that are not captured by traditional crystallographic methods
- Provide deeper insights into the relationship between order, disorder, and the properties of porous crystalline materials
Through examples and insights from his research, Prof. Canossa demonstrated how single-crystal total scattering analysis can expand our understanding of MOF structures and open new perspectives for studying complex crystalline materials.
This webinar continued the second season of the MOFspace Webinar Series, bringing together researchers and experts to share recent advances, innovative approaches, and new perspectives in MOF science.
Watch the recording and discover how looking beyond the average crystal structure can transform our understanding of MOFs!
